Privacy Policy

1. Overview

Vellum ("we", "us", "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

2. Data We Collect

• Account information: A pseudonymous account identifier is created so the iPhone app can provide and synchronize parts of the service. If you choose Sign in with Apple, Apple may also provide an email address and, on the first authorization, a name. Account information is stored in Supabase (our authentication and database provider).
• Subscription data: Plan type, billing dates, and payment status. Payments are processed by Stripe — we never see or store your credit card number.
• Reading data: Your library and reading history are stored on your devices and in your private iCloud account when iCloud sync is enabled. To provide subscriptions, synchronization, and reading insights, selected reading information is also stored in Supabase. This may include book metadata, shelf and progress information, ratings, reading-session and completion records, goals, aggregate statistics, app/platform information, and a pseudonymous account identifier. Private notes and free-form reviews are not sent to Supabase.
• Analytics and diagnostics: We use Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to understand feature usage and diagnose reliability problems. Analytics may include the search terms you enter, search result counts, and book identifiers or titles for events such as rating or finishing a book. We use search terms to understand which books and authors are most commonly searched for. You can turn analytics and diagnostics off in the iPhone app under Settings.

3. How We Use Your Data

• To provide and maintain the Vellum service
• To process subscription payments via Stripe
• To send transactional emails (receipts, account confirmations)
• To synchronize supported features and generate reading insights
• To understand feature usage and improve the App

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services that may process your data:

• Supabase — Authentication and database hosting
• Stripe — Payment processing
• Resend — Transactional email delivery
• Apple — App distribution, Sign in with Apple, in-app purchases, and optional iCloud synchronization
• Firebase — App analytics and crash diagnostics
• Vercel — Website hosting

Each service operates under its own privacy policy. We do not sell your data or use it to track you across other companies' apps and websites.

5. Data Retention

We retain account, subscription, and synchronized reading records while your account is active. If you delete your account in the iPhone app, we cancel any active Stripe subscription and permanently delete account and synchronized reading records we are not legally required to retain. Deleting your Vellum account does not cancel a subscription purchased through Apple; Apple subscriptions must be managed through your Apple account. Your local and private iCloud reading library is separate and can be deleted from Settings → Delete All Reading Data. If you continue using Vellum after account deletion, the app may create a new pseudonymous account to provide its services.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your account and associated server-side data
• Export your reading data

You can delete your account from the iPhone app in Settings by choosing Delete Account. For access, correction, export, or questions about deletion, contact us at support@vellumread.com.

7. Children's Privacy

Vellum is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), row-level security on our database, and secure authentication via Supabase. No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
